Special Mississippi Sales Tax Rules

2025 Grocery Tax Reduction

Starting July 1, 2025, Mississippi will reduce the sales tax on groceries from 7% to 5% for food and food ingredients eligible for purchase with food stamps. This represents a significant tax relief for families.

What qualifies for the reduced 5% rate:

  • Food and food ingredients eligible for food stamps
  • Unprepared foods for home consumption

Still taxed at 7%: Prepared foods, restaurant meals, candy, and other items not eligible for food stamps continue to be taxed at the full rate.

Tax-Exempt Items

Mississippi exempts limited categories from sales tax

  • Prescription Drugs: Medications prescribed by licensed providers, Medicare/Medicaid covered items
  • Manufacturing Equipment: Machinery and equipment used directly in manufacturing
  • Agricultural Production: Farm machinery, equipment, and production supplies

Annual Sales Tax Holiday

Mississippi holds a Sales Tax Holiday (typically in late July) where clothing, footwear, and school supplies under $100 per item are exempt from sales tax. This helps families save on back-to-school shopping.
