Idaho Grocery Credit

While Idaho taxes groceries at 6.000%, the state offers a grocery credit of $100 per person on your state income tax return to offset this cost.

How it works: Each Idaho resident can claim a $100 grocery credit when filing their state income tax return. A family of four can claim up to $400.

Eligibility: Available to all Idaho residents, regardless of income level. Claim it on Form 24 when filing your Idaho individual income tax return.

Example Savings

If you spend $1,000 on groceries, you pay $60 in sales tax. The $100 grocery credit on your tax return more than offsets this cost.

Tax-Exempt & Taxable Items

Idaho has fewer exemptions than most states

  • Exempt: Prescription drugs
  • Taxable: Groceries (6% tax, but $100 credit available)
  • Taxable: Clothing and footwear (6% tax)
  • Taxable: Over-the-counter drugs (6% tax)
  • Taxable: Prepared food (6% tax)

Note: Idaho's simple tax structure means most items are taxable at 6%, with the grocery credit system helping offset food costs.

How Idaho Compares to Neighboring States
